I began indoor rock climbing over a year ago, and it quickly became more than just a way to stay active. Climbing is the first physical activity I’ve truly wanted to improve at, not just for physical strength but for the technique and problem-solving it demands. It provides my mind with a much needed break as I become fully absorbed in figuring out how to move my body to reach the next hold and, ultimately, the top of the route. The outside world just fades away—it’s just me, the wall, and the belayer.
Recently, I took my skills to the crag, and beyond connecting with nature, outdoor climbing has deepened my sense of camaraderie with fellow climbers. The sport is surrounded by a truly supportive community. The experience of sharing gear, relying on each other to place and clean routes, exchanging climbing tips, and cheering each other on have deepened my appreciation for the community.
My piece, titled “the rope connecting two”, explores my third place—the crag. The title is inspired by a quote from Rodney William Whitacker, in which he describes the bond between the climber and the belayer. The photo transfers featured in the work depict climbers, belayers, and the rope between them.
